Acoustic Contrasts

The 5 Classic Mandarin Minimal Pairs

Minimal pairs are words or sounds that differ by only a single acoustic feature. Tap both audio buttons back-to-back to calibrate your inner ear.

Unaspirated vs. Aspirated Bilabial爸 (bà) vs. 怕 (pà)

ㄅ releases zero burst of air (like 'p' in English 'spin'). ㄆ releases a strong, puffing burst of air (like 'p' in English 'pin').

Linguistic Tip: Hold a paper slip or your hand in front of your lips. The paper should not move for ㄅ, but should visibly flutter for ㄆ.

vs
Alveolar Plosive Contrast搭 (dā) vs. 他 (tā)

Both place the tongue tip on the upper gum ridge. ㄉ releases softly with zero airflow, while ㄊ forcefully pops with breath.

Linguistic Tip: Mandarin 'd' is NOT voiced like English 'dad'; it is a crisp, unvoiced, voiceless stop.

vs
Velar Plosive Contrast哥 (gē) vs. 棵 (kē)

Tongue body raises against the soft palate. ㄍ produces a clean, dry pop; ㄎ releases an intense expulsion of air.

Linguistic Tip: Compare English 'skill' (unaspirated k = ㄍ) versus 'kill' (aspirated k = ㄎ).

vs
Retroflex vs. Dental Sibilant知 (zhī) vs. 姿 (zī)

ㄓ curls the tongue tip upward toward the hard palate. ㄗ keeps the tongue flat and presses against the backs of the front teeth.

Linguistic Tip: In authentic Taiwanese Mandarin, retroflexes are gentle and natural, never overly exaggerated.

vs
Front Nasal vs. Back Nasal身 (shēn) vs. 聲 (shēng)

ㄣ finishes with the tongue tip touching the roof of the mouth behind front teeth. ㄥ drops the tongue tip and seals at the back throat.

Linguistic Tip: Feel where sound resonates: ㄣ vibrates through the front of your nose; ㄥ resonates deep in the pharynx.
